The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) is tasked with supporting the implementation and use of the_Legal Entity Identifier (LEI). GLEIF “enables smarter, less costly and more reliable decisions about who to do business with” by providing “open, standardised and high quality legal entity reference data” to uniquely identify companies. This open data includes its Level 2 Data on who owns whom.
The corporate ownership data collected and published openly by GLEIF is not beneficial ownership data as it does not identify the natural persons at the end of ownership chains but Open Ownership has mapped a combination of Level 1 and Level 2 Data to version 0.4 of our Beneficial Ownership Data Standard in order to analyse and learn more from layering this data on top of beneficial ownership data sources.

We have also published a data use guide with information about how we have represented change over time and how specific fields have been mapped.

The UK People with significant control (PSC) Register was launched in 2016 and contains beneficial ownership details declared for companies registered with Companies House.
The UK Register of Overseas Entities was launched in 2022. Overseas entities who want to buy, sell or transfer property or land in the UK, must register with Companies House and explain who their registrable beneficial owners or managing officers are.
The data from both registers is published openly. In order to understand and transform this data, we use it in combination with the Free Company Data Product from Companies House which provides a snapshot containing basic company data for live companies.
You can search information from Companies House for free at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk or learn more about the data products and application programming interfaces (APIs) offered to encourage reuse of its company and beneficial ownership data.

We have also published a data use guide that details the key modeling decisions made during the mapping process and provides field-level mapping information to support data use and analysis.
